Through the Lens of Keizo Kitajima

Sometimes we hear about events in the art world that urge us to explore what all the hype is about. I cannot remember how I had heard about a current photography exhibition on display, but word of this event raised my inquisitive nature. To satiate my interest and curiosity, I ventured out to Los Angeles; needless to say, I was not disappointed.
The quenching source of my curiosity was Little Big Man Gallery and their current exhibition titled New Street History which offers viewers a retrospective of acclaimed Japanese photographer Keizo Kitajima, who studied with the famous photographer Daido Moriyama. The exhibition displays works that span three decades and offers 25 images from four of Kitajima’s projects that include Photo Express: Tokyo (1979), New York (1981), works from a commission in the former Soviet Union (1989-1991) and A.D. (1991) respectively.
Upon entering the gallery, viewers are welcomed with a large scale mural from Kitajima’s A.D. (1991) project. that immediately challenges one to make eye contact; inviting you into the gallery space to investigate and enjoy Kitajima’s images. Kitajima’s photographs, with their captured human expressions and gestures, provoke a sense of wonder and exploration; which Little Big Man gallery’s space accentuates with its open floor plan and vaulted ceilings. The gallery’s white walls leave no distractions for the viewer, allowing for the unlimited possibilities of engagement with each photograph.
Keiko Kitajima’s New Street History will be on display until November 27th, 2016. If you are in Los Angeles or are looking for a reason to visit, stop by Little Big Man Gallery and explore the world through the eyes of Keiko Kitajima.
